Comparison of the amount of time in seconds to build the same 106 layer model with 200 columns (21200 cells) with most processes turned on (siliciclastic deposition, flexural loading, and compaction). The result is plotted at the completion of the model.
The Fortran on the Macintosh is compiled with Absoft MacFortran v3.4. The C++ on the Macintosh with Metrowerks CW9. The C++ on the Intel chip with Visual C++ (level 2 optimization failed). The UNIX platforms with the SUN and SGI compilers.
All code is optimized to the fullest extent that does not corrupt the result.
All models were run on machines with greater than 32 Mb of RAM. This allows all of the process to run in RAM. No other applications were running in the background.
